HONG KONG, 10 August 2011 – ARL’s Quay Crane Visualiser software in SCT Shekou Container Terminal in Shenzhen and QQCT Qingdao Qianwan Container Terminal in Qingdao.
The ARL Quay Crane Visualiser provides a rich visual and interactive interface to hatch clerks, tally clerks and quay crane drivers executing the vessel operations using handheld or cabin-mounted WIFI-connected graphical devices, possibly with a touch screen for easy interaction. The clerks and drivers see and interact with the upcoming, completed and current moves in accordance with the planned quay crane activities.
Karl Xie, SCT Shekou Container Terminal’s IT Manager states “We are already up and running on WIFI-connected devices for our hatch clerks in part of our quay side and with ARL’s next software version also supporting logging of container damages and seal number input, we will scale up the infrastructure to cover the full quay side and harvest the benefits to the full extend for our terminal”. He continues “Our new graphical tool allow us to adjust plans much more dynamically as crane planning changes are directly available from the hatch clerks’ and quay crane drivers’ devices, and they don’t have to wait for us to physically re-distribute printed bayplans”.
The tool display step-by-step load and discharge work instructions within the graphical bay plan and automatically refresh changes to the planned working sequence available electronically on the quayside, onboard and in-cabin, and refreshes the bay geometry on the screen. The graphical overview uses colour coding for the moves to be done and support interaction by point and touch, if a touch screen device is utilised.
The Quay Crane Visualiser is also tried out in North China’s largest terminal, QQCT Qingdao Qianwan Container Terminal, supporting a new revolutionary process re-engineering of the hatch clerk work, allowing the same hatch clerk team to handle all cranes for a vessel. Jessy Zhu, QQCT IT Manager states “The innovative process re-engineering we are putting in motion is substantial and we are happy to see that advanced software tools are already available off-the-shelve including integration to our TOS to support this process. ARL deployed the tool with us literally in a matter of days”.

Jebel Ali, DP World’s UAE flagship terminal, has deployed ARL’s Berthing Planner and Resource Demand Manager for use with their T1 and T2 terminals’ planning functions.
HONG KONG, 4th April 2011 – Jebel Ali planning team uses Berthing Planner for graphical planning of vessel calls and quay cranes in space (berths and cable reach) and time while Resource Demand Manager automatically calculates volume of land-side or sea-side resources for executing operation of the upcoming shifts. Need for resources like cranes, trucks, gates or tugs are calculated per timeslot based on the changing ETA and ETD of arriving vessels, and rules defined per line, service, vessel or vessel type, and based on productivity and cargo volumes.
DP World, Jebel Ali’s Director of Planning, Pedro Caballero, states “The rules-based automatic resource demand calculation of the tool allows us to focus our manual planning expertise on exceptions and leave most of every-day resource planning to the Resource Demand Manager, as this automatically taps into our vessels’ ETA/ETD”. ARL’s director and CEO, René Bendt, adds: "Even we believe the rules based resource planning will add value to almost any size of terminal, we are happy to see it in use with a mega-terminal like Jebel Ali”.
The berthing plan, quay crane assignments and resource demand are adjusted during the workday, as updated ETA/ETDs are received from the shipping line customers. By establishing the current productivity of active quay cranes, the vessel ETDs are projected automatically and used for onwards and continuously updated planning. The resource planning is depending on vessels’ ETA/ETD as well as labour shifts set. Concrete physical resources like cranes and trucks are assigned in the tool, and data is passed electronically to a labour management system for assigning concrete labour resources.
It is the intention, that the Jebel Ali Marine Department additionally start using the Resource Demand Manager during 2011 for planning of harbour tugs and pilots/pilot boats, and in particular the “moves-to-go” feature auto-adjusting the ETD by the current quay crane performance, will assist in providing continuous up-to-date timings for assigning departure harbour tugs.

HONG KONG, 19 October 2010 – Lashing Gang Planning software launched by ARL.
The ARL Lashing Planner provide visual planning of stevedore lashing teams working on the wharf side and on the vessels in container terminals and save lashing gang costs by optimizing the lashing resources in accordance with planned quay crane activities. The tool additionally follows the execution of quay crane operations and safeguards that lashing assignments are adjusted according to real-life operations, and eventually substantiate the achieved savings.
Tapping into the planned container moves and hatch moves for the quay cranes assigned to incoming vessels and applying rules for optimal lashing team assignments, the Lashing Planner create an optimized lashing team plan. The plan handle shifting of the lashing teams across vessel bays in operation as well as bays across vessels at the quay side, and result in reduced costs by cutting the overall lashing team requirement by at least 15-20%.
The ARL Lashing Planner is currently being tested in a major Middle Eastern terminal, who are validating that the Lashing Planner successfully resolves planning challenges with terminal planners, responsible for stevedore planning including assigning lashers, dowelmen and conemen.

Pic: Vessel view visualizing the planned lashing gangs activities.
ARL’s Singapore based director and CEO, René Bendt, states: "Planning of lashers is an often overlooked area of resource utilization in a terminal, however, the potential for increasing the lashing teams’ productivity handling more vessel bays and more vessels with the same lashing teams, whether harvested directly by the terminal operator or via a sub-contractor, is definitely there”.
ARL have added a ROI calculator to their Lashing Planner portal, http://arl-shipping.com/terminals/lpt, allowing any terminal to quickly assess the potential savings by optimizing the lashing team planning. ARL claims, that in most cases the payback for tool supported optimized lashing planning is counted in a few months, allowing the savings to be harvested in same year as the investment, avoiding any decision-heavy capital or cash flow challenges.

TCC, The Containership Company, adds online schedule enquiries to their web-site using arl-shipping.com’s e-Schedule web platform.
COPENHAGEN, HONG KONG, August 16, 2010 – The TCC website, containership-company.com, now allows customers and business partners to query for suitable departures or arrivals, and to subscribe to updated email-schedules at their selected weekday and timing.
“Self-service, including online schedule enquiries, is a must for maintaining low costs as part of our no-frills approach to container shipping”, says Lars Jensen, director Marketing & IT from TCC. Lars, who has a past as director of youship.com, Maersk’s initiative for self-service liner services, continues: “Our online schedules are additionally available electronically for our booking partners consolidating cargo from smaller shippers and forwarders. Our partners can choose to re-publish the electronic schedules towards their own customers and use the schedules as a core for taking electronic bookings and giving online freight quotes”, he adds.
ARL’s CEO, Rene Bendt, supplements: “e-Schedule is capable of re-publishing and re-branding the core transport services offered by a shipping line like TCC, so TCC’s partner intermediaries can supplement the no-frills transport services offered by TCC with their own value-add services, like pick-up, delivery and multi-modal transport services, customs clearance, documentation and other supplementary services, leaving all players in the transport industry to focus on their core services and yet work seemingly together".
About TCC, The Containership Company
TCC is a new container shipping line focusing on delivering no-frills, simple and innovative services to the market. TCC has pioneered a new service from Taicang, outside Shanghai, to Los Angeles – a service providing simple port to port transportation.
Already TCC has been nominated as one of only four finalists for the prestigious “Company of the Year” award in Lloyds List’s Global Awards. The nomination is on the grounds that TCC managed to successfully launch a container shipping company, with a new concept, at a time where the industry had the biggest downturn ever seen and global collective losses were approaching USD 20 billion.

HONG KONG & ROTTERDAM, 17 September 2009 - Port of Tanjung Pelepas, PTP deploy suite of ARL tools for RTG & yard block management; the RTG Deployer, the RTG Dispatcher and the Yard Clash Predictor.
The RTG Deployer calculates the amount of RTGs needed on the yard for the next shifts based on the terminals set target productivity taking the planned and yet un-planned quay crane moves into account. The RTG Dispatcher produces optimized RTG dispatching instructions in real time assuring maximum utilization of all RTGs on the yard by using sophisticated math optimization algorithms. The Yard Clash Predictor concludes, if the currently planned sequence of quay crane moves will result in derived yard clashes, and prompts the terminal to re-plan and eliminate the yard clashes well in advance, securing an un-interrupted quay crane operation.
The optimization tools read the data updated in the Terminal Operating System and constantly apply optimization algorithms to offer the best possible planning and execution scenarios to the operator.
Better planning and optimized operational execution result in less fuel and maintenance expenses, minimal idle time for RTGs on the yard, no delays in quay crane, vessel, rail, or gate operations, and an optimal number of RTGs deployed even during peak times. Planning teams can deploy a low amount of RTGs, yet sufficient to perform all planned moves without delays.
PTP, South East Asia's fastest growing port, is strategically located at the southwest shoulder of Johor, Malaysia, with a minimum diversion time from the confluence of the main international shipping lanes. The port's location presents significant geographical advantages through its deep waters, sheltered bay and wide access channel. PTP is already the user of ARLs Berthing Planner and Resource Demand Manager.

From left: Chandran Raman Kutty, Operations Execution Manager (PTP), Mohd Fairuz Sukar, Senior RTG Dispatcher (PTP), Ren Bendt, CEO (ARL) and Thiagu Krishnan, Operations Execution Senior Manager (PTP). The PTP planners have increased the RTG productivity with more than 15% compared to an end-2008 performance benchmark.
The ARL tools have allowed PTP to try out some variants of deployment and management of the RTG fleet in a reliable and predictable manner, resulting in a significantly higher RTG productivity, eventually enabling the experienced and skilled planning teams to focus on exception management to a much higher degree, rather than being instrumental in executing the day-to-day planning and operations monitoring. The direct savings resulting from the increased productivity has paid back PTPs initial investment in a matter of weeks.
"We are happy to deliver these RTG & yard management optimization tools to PTP and highly appreciate the contribution PTP has made during the development phase. PTPs aggressive quest for continuous improvement of the terminal efficiency has been a major contributing factor for us now releasing these tools to the market" adds arl-shipping.com and ARL Consulting Director & CEO, Rene Bendt.
